How to Deactivate an Aadhaar Card After a Person Passes Away
After a person passes away, their Aadhaar number is neither given to anyone else nor removed from the database. It is only deactivated, so that it cannot be misused in pension, subsidy or identity fraud. Since June 2025, UIDAI has offered a facility on the myAadhaar portal that lets a family member report a death online. The full process is explained below in simple language.
Key Features
- After death the Aadhaar number is deactivated. It is not deleted and is never issued to another person.
- A family member can report the death on the myAadhaar portal using the "Report Death of a Family Member" service.
- This service covers states/UTs where deaths are registered through the Civil Registration System (CRS). The remaining states are being added.
- UIDAI also deactivates Aadhaar on its own using death records from the Registrar General of India (RGI) and states.
- If the death certificate carries the Aadhaar number, the process can be faster.
- The family member reporting the death must have their own Aadhaar and an active linked mobile number.
Steps to Report a Death Online
- First, get the death certificate from the death registrar of the municipal corporation / municipality / gram panchayat. It also gives you the death registration number.
- Open the UIDAI website myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and choose "Report Death of a Family Member".
- Log in with your own Aadhaar number and OTP.
- Enter the deceased person's Aadhaar number, name, gender, date of death, death registration number and the certificate issue date.
- Select your relationship with the deceased and upload the death certificate.
- Review all the details, submit and keep the reference number you receive.
- UIDAI validates the information provided, and the Aadhaar is then deactivated as per its process.
What to Keep Ready
- A clear scanned copy of the death certificate.
- The deceased person's Aadhaar number and death registration number.
- Your own Aadhaar and its active linked mobile number (for OTP).
- Details of your relationship with the deceased.
Important Points
- Enter only correct and verified details. A wrong number can affect the Aadhaar of a living person.
- If the service does not appear for your state on the portal, call the UIDAI helpline 1947, write to help@uidai.gov.in or take guidance from your nearest Aadhaar center.
- Deactivating an Aadhaar is not a substitute for legal heir or succession procedures. For bank accounts, pension, insurance and similar matters, the heir/nominee process must be done separately.
- Do not use the deceased person's Aadhaar, OTP or biometrics for any purpose. That can amount to misuse.
- Do not pay any extra money to an agent or middleman for this report.

किसी व्यक्ति की मृत्यु के बाद उसका आधार नंबर न तो किसी और को दिया जाता है और न ही डेटाबेस से हटाया जाता है। उसे केवल निष्क्रिय (deactivate) किया जाता है, ताकि पेंशन, सब्सिडी या पहचान की धोखाधड़ी में उसका दुरुपयोग न हो सके। UIDAI ने जून 2025 से myAadhaar पोर्टल पर परिवार के सदस्य को मृत्यु की सूचना ऑनलाइन देने की सुविधा शुरू की है। नीचे पूरी प्रक्रिया आसान भाषा में दी गई है।
मुख्य जानकारी (Key Features)
- मृत्यु के बाद आधार नंबर निष्क्रिय होता है। वह डिलीट नहीं होता और कभी किसी दूसरे व्यक्ति को नहीं दिया जाता।
- परिवार का सदस्य myAadhaar पोर्टल पर "Report Death of a Family Member" सुविधा से मृत्यु की सूचना दे सकता है।
- यह सुविधा उन राज्यों/केंद्रशासित प्रदेशों के लिए है जहां मृत्यु का पंजीकरण Civil Registration System (CRS) से होता है। बाकी राज्यों को जोड़ने का काम जारी है।
- UIDAI रजिस्ट्रार जनरल ऑफ इंडिया (RGI) और राज्यों के मृत्यु रिकॉर्ड से भी खुद आधार निष्क्रिय करता है।
- मृत्यु प्रमाणपत्र में आधार नंबर दर्ज हो तो प्रक्रिया तेज़ हो सकती है।
- सूचना देने वाले सदस्य के पास अपना आधार और उससे जुड़ा चालू मोबाइल नंबर होना ज़रूरी है।
ऑनलाइन मृत्यु की सूचना देने के स्टेप्स
- सबसे पहले नगर निगम / नगरपालिका / ग्राम पंचायत के मृत्यु पंजीयक से मृत्यु प्रमाणपत्र बनवाएं। इसी से मृत्यु पंजीकरण संख्या मिलती है।
- UIDAI की वेबसाइट myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in खोलें और "Report Death of a Family Member" का विकल्प चुनें।
- अपने खुद के आधार नंबर और OTP से लॉगिन करें।
- मृतक का आधार नंबर, नाम, लिंग, मृत्यु की तारीख, मृत्यु पंजीकरण संख्या और प्रमाणपत्र जारी होने की तारीख भरें।
- मृतक से अपना संबंध चुनें और मृत्यु प्रमाणपत्र अपलोड करें।
- सारी जानकारी जांचकर सबमिट करें और मिलने वाला रेफरेंस नंबर सुरक्षित रख लें।
- UIDAI दी गई जानकारी का सत्यापन करता है और उसके बाद आधार निष्क्रिय करने की कार्रवाई होती है।
सूचना देते समय क्या तैयार रखें?
- मृत्यु प्रमाणपत्र की साफ़ स्कैन कॉपी।
- मृतक का आधार नंबर और मृत्यु पंजीकरण संख्या।
- आपका अपना आधार और उससे जुड़ा चालू मोबाइल नंबर (OTP के लिए)।
- मृतक से आपके संबंध की जानकारी।
ज़रूरी बातें
- केवल सही और सत्यापित जानकारी ही भरें। गलत नंबर डालने से किसी जीवित व्यक्ति का आधार प्रभावित हो सकता है।
- अगर आपके राज्य में पोर्टल पर यह सुविधा नहीं दिख रही, तो UIDAI हेल्पलाइन 1947 पर कॉल करें, help@uidai.gov.in पर लिखें या नज़दीकी आधार केंद्र से मार्गदर्शन लें।
- आधार निष्क्रिय होना उत्तराधिकार या वारिस की प्रक्रिया का विकल्प नहीं है। बैंक खाता, पेंशन, बीमा आदि के लिए वारिस/नॉमिनी की प्रक्रिया अलग से करनी होगी।
- मृतक के आधार, OTP या बायोमेट्रिक का कोई इस्तेमाल न करें। यह दुरुपयोग की श्रेणी में आ सकता है।
- इस सूचना के लिए किसी एजेंट या दलाल को अतिरिक्त पैसे न दें।
